MY Teaching Portfolio

 INTRODUCTION

Beginning my Art career in Memphis, Tennessee, I found opportunities to encourage and even influence my peers.  I often worked ahead in study groups so that I could teach the content to my friends and other colleagues.  I would say that I value knowledge just as much as I am passionate about art.  With that being said, I have learned that my most effective way to learn is to teach.

Art and Community

I started teaching workshops and summer camps after graduating from art school, some private, but mostly through Arrow Creative.  The lessons were successful, and I enjoyed the community of people that came through.  I was essentially teaching art classes in the same environment where my artwork was being sold.

Teaching Experience

Private Lesson and workshops

I began teaching private lessons in 2016, visiting schools and conducting demonstrations.  I also taught summer courses and private lessons, both on and off-site, at Arrow Creative.  I have participated in a workshop through MSCS during our DLD meeting, where I did a very well-received Bird painting workshop.

Process

I begin each piece with a vision in mind, but allow the materials and my instincts to guide me as I work. I believe that the process of creating art should be just as fulfilling as the finished piece.

Classroom Experience

I began teaching at Memphis Shelby County Schools in the spring of 2023.  I still teach art at Keystone Elementary, and I am thankful for the community and connection my school and art department have all around.  While teaching Pre-K -5th grade, I like to brainstorm ways to keep the lesson engaging, even if it means adding a current popular element to a preexisting lesson.  My lessons are often structured, but I am always ready to pivot if it's not stimulating enough.  Usually, if they are bored, then I am bored too.  My school has an award-winning outdoor classroom that we can always explore and create in when the weather permits.  It truly is my second home, and I always look forward to seeing my groups.  I taught at TN Compass schools over the summer through a grant supplied by River Arts and it was a very inspiring and influential experience, as long as I have time I will always be willing to do it again.
